National Merit Scholarship Program
Each year, over one million high school students across the country take the PSAT/NMQT (Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test/ National Merit Qualifying Test) to compete in the National Merit Scholarship Program.
High School juniors who score in the top two percent in each state on the PSAT are selected as Semi-finalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program. Some of these students advance to Finalist standing by meeting high academic standards & other requirements outlined by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.
The National Merit Scholarship Program – also recognizes juniors who placed in the top five percent in the nation on the PSAT as Commended students. Academically able Black American students who score the highest in the state in their region are recognized as National Achievement Scholars.
