The Alabama State Department of Education and the Alabama High School
Athletic Association collaborate with the Shelby County Board of Education to
sponsor a training conference each year to assist school personnel in their mission
to address the needs of students enrolled in school. One of our primary concerns
for our students are the factors that influence them and cause them to become
“at-risk” and in danger of not graduating high school. For this reason, Creating
Alternative Pathways for Student Success was established in 1994. The sole
purpose of the CAPS Conference is to train and provide awareness about the
current issues facing our children today – alcohol, drugs, cell phones, gangs,
violence, bullying, etc. as well as addressing academic challenges and assisting these
students to obtain success by equipping our teachers with alternative teaching
strategies. In addition, innovative strategies are also shared to address students
who fail to succeed due to truancy and a lack of parental support. All of these
concerns are addressed at this conference and our mission is to provide educators
with available opportunities and assist them in helping all students. |
