Is there a dress code? Yes, check the Shelby County Code of Conduct for the dress code at CHMS. Generally make sure your appearance and clothing do not interfere with learning.
Are leggings and a t-shirt or sweatshirt allowed? No, they are not allowed at school
Are students allowed to wear athletic shorts? No, neither boys nor girls are allowed to wear athletic shorts.
What is it like to be in 6th Grade? Sixth Grade students have electives, PE, and lunch with other 6th graders. Sixth Grade students are encouraged to attend Pep Rallies, after school athletic events, TNO (Teens Night Out), and other extra-curricular activities announced throughout the year.
What if I have a problem? You can always speak with a teacher or ask to speak to the counselor.
Can 6th graders participate in school sports? According to the Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA), sixth graders are not eligible to participate in school sanctioned athletic events.
Can I stay after school or come early? Doors open at 7:10 a.m. and 6th graders meet in 6th grade/Auxiliary Gym. You may also eat breakfast at this time. You can only stay after school for a club or team meeting or detention.
What happens if I miss class? You must ask your teachers for your make up work and turn it in in a timely manner. You must also bring an excuse and give it to your first period teacher.
What if I get sick/need medicine? Ask your teacher to go to the school nurse. Medications from your parents must be dispensed by the nurse. You cannot bring medicine to school and take it on your own.
The most important thing--LUNCH! You will go to lunch with a class. Pay with your personal lunch number. Don't forget to keep money in your account. You cannot charge a lunch. Students will turn in their lunch money to the cafeteria in the morning or at lunch time.
What supplies do I need? Check the CHMS website for supply list. Remember to get extra pens and paper.
