Principal Mary Cooper
Mary Cooper - Principal - Mary Cooper came to Helena Elementary School as Principal in July 2001. Before coming to HES, Ms. Cooper served six years as an elementary principal and nineteen years as a classroom teacher, teaching grades one through six. She has previously lived and worked in Alabama, Iowa, Michigan and Nebraska. Ms. Cooper received her Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa. She earned a Master of Arts in Teaching in the area of reading and language arts from Oakland University, Rochester Hills, Michigan. Her Educational Specialist certification is in Educational Administration from Wayne State University, Detroit, Michigan.
Ms. Cooper has two daughters, Laura and Sarah. Laura, a graduate of the University of Montevallo, is a regional operations manager for a bank; she and her husband live in Panama City Beach, Florida. Sarah, a graduate of the University of Alabama, is currently staying at home to be a full-time mom; she, her husband and son live in Birmingham. In her spare time, Ms. Cooper enjoys her family and friends, reading, gardening, exploring, walking, college sports and the Detroit Red Wings.
Ms. Cooper loves to learn and she has many, many favorite children's books! Some of these include Make Way for Ducklings, Amos and Boris, George and Martha stories, The Little Red Lighthouse and the Great Gray Bridge, The Wreck of the Zephyr, Knots on a Counting Rope, The Phantom Tollbooth and Island of the Blue Dolphins. Her former students wrote some of her favorite books and stories.
