Each student is recommended by his/her present math teacher for course placement for the following year. Teachers consider test scores, class performance, and student motivation before making recommendations.
Four years of English are required for graduation. All levels of English use the same base texts, and all adhere to the Alabama Course of Study. Admission to Advanced/Honors or AP classes requires a teacher's recommendation. All classes listed as English, Advanced English, Honors English, and AP English meet the requirements for all diplomas. Employment English meets the requirements for the Occupational Diploma only.
Summer reading is required at all levels and classes in accordance with Shelby County Language Arts Curriculum, and testing of these summer readings will be done during the first few weeks of the school year.
Physical Sciences include: Physical Science, Physical Science, Earth Science, Aerospace Science/Astronomy, Chemistry, Honors Chemistry, AP Chemistry, Physics, and AP Physics. Life Sciences include: Biology, Honors Biology, AP Biology, Sports Medicine Anatomy, Anatomy & Physiology, Environmental Science, AP Environmental Science and Marine Biology/Zoology.
Social Studies Department
The State of Alabama requirements for Social Studies are: World History/Geography Since 1500 in the 9 th Grade , U.S. Colonial History in the 10 th Grade , U.S. Modern History in the 11 th Grade, and American Government/ Economics in the 12 th Grade. An acceptable alternative for transfer students may be given credit. Regular, Honors, or Advanced Placement in each of these courses will meet the requirements for all diplomas. Psychology and Sociology are offered as electives.
Fine Arts Department
The purpose of a comprehensive Arts Education program in grades 9-12 is to continue the vision for appreciation of the arts that was created through the elementary and middle school grades. Students will develop both the creative and appreciative dimensions of the arts disciplines. Each arts discipline has its own subject matter, concepts, skills, vocabulary, and means of communication and expression. The arts education programs provide our students with the opportunity to fulfill their individual needs, talents, and dreams.
Foreign Language Department
The foreign language curriculum will help prepare students for today's global and diverse society. Study in the various languages will increase students' awareness and appreciation of other cultures as well as broaden their perspective of their own language and heritage.
Family & Consumer Sciences
The Family & Consumer Sciences mission is to prepare students for family life, work, and careers in Family & Consumer Sciences Education by providing opportunities to develop the knowledge, skills, attitudes and behaviors needed for: strengthening the well-being of individuals and families, becoming responsible citizens and leaders, promoting optimal nutrition and wellness, balancing personal, home, family and work lives, appreciating human worth and accepting responsibility for one's actions and success in family and work life, and enhancing intellectual development and maximizing potential. Students have the opportunity to participate in the service organization FCCLA (Family, Career and Community Leaders of America). This is the only student organization with family as its central focus. Students have many leadership and community service opportunities within the organization.
Business & Marketing Ed. Department
Business and Marketing Education are specialized instructional programs with sequential classes structured to prepare students for a career in business or marketing professions. These programs prepare individuals for occupations in accounting, finance, management, administration, advertising, marketing and computer information processing. Students are encouraged to participate in the service organization Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) or Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA). FBLA and DECA are youth organizations that expand leadership opportunities and business and marketing skills development for students.
