SUCCESS Program
The Shelby County School
System's Success Program is designed to prevent at-risk high school
students from dropping out of school. The Program provides academic
skills of a general education nature and proficiencies in a
Career/Technical area for students in the program.
Success provides
services to all eight high schools in Shelby County. Students are
referred through counselors and administrators from their home-based
high school.
The Success Program
offers a setting where at-risk students stay in school and enjoy their
success because they are accepted, encouraged, and valued. Because of
the many ingredients and facets of the Success Program, students feel
ownership of the program, develop pride in their work, and develop
responsibility for themselves and their actions.
Students set their own
pace for their progressive performance. Students can not graduate early,
but by working hard, they can make up lost time and get back "on track"
with their graduating class. Students can graduate from high school with
a diploma plus job skills that will help them succeed in a career!
The
three components of the Success Program are Academics, Life Skills, and
Career/Technical Education.
Academics
Each individual's academic courses are taught through computer assisted
instruction, as well as paper/pencil activities. The academic portion of
the Success Program also includes individualized instruction,
computerized assistance in
English,
Science,
Math, and Social Studies, Alabama High School
Graduation Exam preparation, and a self-paced curriculum.
Life Skills
Students spend two or three hours each week with a group of their peers
from the Success Program in Life Skills sessions. Here students feel
safe and comfortable. A teacher/counselor instructs the group in
character education sessions. Students learn to resolve problems, to
improve motivation, to listen and communicate, and to manage behavior. To learn more, click

Career/Technical
Education
Career/Technical
Education certification is an essential element of the Success Program.
In order for a student to become certified in a Career/Technical area,
it is necessary that a planned sequential course of study be developed
and implemented to best serve his/her needs. Students may choose courses
from the 13 Career/Technical Education departments on our campus. |
