AL 932nd AFJROTC

Welcome to the Thompson High School Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFJROTC) program. Our unit is officially known as the Alabama 932nd AFJROTC Group. After a brief history of our unit and its purpose, we’ll return to the details of each course. Air Force JROTC was established at THS in the summer of 1993 and has experienced improvement each year. The sole purpose of our organization is to help make you a better, more responsible citizen of your community, state and nation. Our primary way of doing this is by giving each cadet the opportunity to accept certain responsibilities in the classroom and in the operation of the unit. These responsibilities are fairly simple the first year and get more complex the following years. This time provides ample training and assistance with his or her responsibilities.

You will find JROTC challenging, exciting, and fun. Each year you are in the program, you will take a different academic course. Freshman can get physical education credit for JROTC, while sophomores, juniors and seniors get elective credit. As a freshman you will take The History of Flight and Airpower. Much of what you learn here can be used in your U. S. History course later in high school. Sophomores take The Science of Flight course. Many principles covered here will also be in your Physical Science course. As a junior you explore space and rocketry in Space Studies. Seniors take a course in Management and use what is learned to help them play a major role in running the group. You will study “leadership” along with your academic course each year. This is where you will learn how to drill, wear you uniform, manage your time, and lead and follow.

As a cadet you will be able to take advantage of our extensive field trip program to leadership camps, Air Force bases, and flights on military aircraft. As a cadet you can experience all this with no obligation to join the military when you graduate from or leave the program. REMEMBER, THE COURSE COSTS YOU NOTHING IN FEES! Uniforms and books are furnished free by the Air Force.

For most of you entering the program, JROTC will be a new and little different experience; however, nothing about it should be difficult. The Air Force requires you to comply with some basic standards while taking the course. For example, we will issue you a uniform, at no cost to you, which you will wear an average of once a week. Again, none of our requirements are difficult if you approach them with a learning, interested, and positive attitude. WELCOME AND GOOD LUCK!
