Parent Questions and Answers
What is teaming? Teaming is a group of teachers that your child will work with during the year. Because a group of teachers has the same kids, this allows for greater flexibility in scheduling and grouping. It also allows teachers to assist students in a personalized way.
How do I register my child? 5th graders will be given forms to choose their electives. They will also be given enrollment forms to turn in. Parents can pay fees at Pre-Registration or at Summer Registration. Students should be given their schedules at Summer Registration. If your child is not from HIS, you will need to make an appointment to register your child during the summer.
How are parent/teacher conferences held? Parent conferences are held with the team of teachers (all of your child's academic teachers). Please email one of the teachers to set up an appointment. These conferences typically take place during school hours.
If my child is struggling, who do I contact? First of all, contact the teacher. If your child does not let the teacher know he/she is struggling, it is difficult to help. You can also contact the counselor. She has contacts for tutors and can give you information about testing, scheduling, and working with your child on improving his or her study skills.
How do I check out or excuse an absence? Check outs: The person checking the student out comes to the front office and presents a picture ID. Once his or her identity is verified, the person checking the student out will sign the Check out log and give the reason for checking out. Excuses: A signed note from a parent or doctor must be received in the attendance office no later than 3 days after the student returns. Excuses (and lunch money) are turned in to the first period teacher each morning.
Questions 6th Graders Might Have:
Is there a dress code? Yes, check the Shelby County Code of Conduct for the dress code at HMS. Generally make sure your appearance and clothing do not interfere with learning.
Do older kids pick on you? 6th grade students have electives, PE, and lunch with other 6th graders so there is little interaction. 6th, 7th, and 8th graders interact as students normally do.
What if I have a problem? You can always speak with a teacher or ask to speak to the counselor.
Can I stay after school or come early? Doors open at 7 a.m. and 6th graders meet in the cafeteria. You may also eat breakfast at this time. You can only stay after school for a club or team meeting or detention.
What happens if I miss class? You must ask your teachers for your make up work and turn it in in a timely manner. You must also bring an excuse and give it to your first period teacher.
What if I get sick/need medicine?Ask your teacher to go to the school nurse. Medications from your parents must be dispensed by the nurse. You cannot bring medicine to school and take it on your own.
The most important thing--LUNCH!You will go to lunch with a class. Pay with your personal lunch number. Don't forget to keep money in your account. You cannot charge a lunch. Lunch money is turned in to the 1st period teacher.
What about my locker? You'll get a locker at Camp Husky or the first week of school. You must put your backpack in the locker every day. You may want to get a combination lock to practice this summer but the lockers will have locks built in. Watch a video to see you how to open one.
What supplies do I need? Check the HMS website for supply list. Remember to get extra pens and paper. You may want to keep them in your locker.
