During the 2023-24 school year, the Community Education Department of Shelby County Schools will offer Driver Education. These sessions will be an open enrollment opportunity for any public, private, or home school student. Upon successful completion of the course, each student will receive class credit, a certificate of completion, vessel endorsement and instructions to acquire their license online. Certified Driver Education instructors will teach the class.

Course requirements: Students must have a permit and turn 16 by the end of May 2024, in order to take one of the classes listed below. There will be summer classes available for students that turn 16 after May 2024. Summer dates will be announced in January 2024.

Prior to beginning class, students must have driven a minimum of 50 miles. The driving experience should include different types of roads.

The Community Ed staff will contact students enrolled via email and all instructions for the class will be given at this time. The academic phase will be completed virtually, within a two week time frame. Each student will receive a temporary Shelby County email address (if they do not attend a Shelby County school) to access the google classroom platform of the course. Driving schedules will be arranged between the student and the driving instructor. All driving will consist of up to six hours of in car instruction.

The Community Education Department of Shelby County Schools will also offer monthly classes during the 2023-2024 school year. Requirements for these classes will be the same as summer school. We suggest for these classes, if the student’s birthday is in February, sign up for the January class to ensure appropriate driving time.
