Lemak Sports Medicine and Helena High School partner for sports medicine course
When the new Helena High School opensthis fall, students in grades 10th through 12th will have the opportunity to participate in a sports medicine curriculum involving Lemak's firm. On April 17th, the Shelby County Board of Education approved the following people to join the Helena High School staff in three key positions:
Cissy Johnson - Cissy Johnson comes to Helena High School with 17 years of experience in choral music education. Mrs. Johnson began her career in the Jefferson County School District, followed by thirteen years in Hoover City Schools. She has spent the last year beginning music programs in three schools in Stevenson, Alabama. Over the course of her career, Mrs. Johnson has taught at the elementary, middle and high school levels. She has also been a cheerleading sponsor, swim team sponsor and began a high school ambassadors program. Mrs. Johnson's choirs consistently receive superior ratings at state, regional and national choral festivals. Show Choirs under her direction have also seen tremendous growth and success. Mrs. Johnson is the Assistant Conductor for the Alabama Civic Chorale, a local group who performs with the Alabama Symphony. She is married to Tony, who coaches at Mt. Brook High School; and, they have three children who will be in Helena schools next year. They will be moving to Helena this summer and are excited to be a part of the community. Mrs. Johnson is looking forward to being a part of the Husky staff and excited about building a successful choral program at HHS.
Keith Maple-Offense Coordinator, Head Wrestling Coach An 18 year coaching veteran, Coach Maple served the last thirteen seasons as head football coach at Springville High school. With a record of 84-60, he led the Springville Tigers to the state play-offs seven of those years. In 2007, Coach Maple started the wrestling program at Springville High School. During his time there, Springville wrestlers competed at the state tournament every year. A native of Birmingham Alabama, Coach Maple was awarded a football scholarship to Jacksonville State University where he played under the legendary Bill Burgess. He received his B.S.Ed. and M.S.Ed. from Jacksonville State University and was a member of the 1992 National Championship Football Team. Coach Maple is married to Reesie Maple. They have two children: Nash, 14, an 8th grader at Helena Middle School and Emily, 10, a 4th grader at Helena Intermediate School.
Chris Laatsch-Head Basketball Coach Coach Chris Laatsch, a Birmingham native, is very excited to be joining Helena High School as the head varsity boys basketball coach. He graduated from the University of Montevallo with a Bachelors of Science in Physical Education. He has previously coached at UMS-Wright in Mobile and Briarwood Christian School in Birmingham. With twenty-one years of coaching experience, Coach Laatsch is eager to serve the Husky Community with excellence. During his coaching career, Coach Laatsch averaged eighteen wins a season and had three Final Four appearances including one State Runner Up and one State Championship. His passion is to see young men, through the experience of the basketball program, develop the character needed to be great men, husbands, and fathers. Coach Chris Laatsch and his wife, Leigh, have seven children: Jason, Katherine, Joshua, William, Allison, Mary Elizabeth and Austin.
Jason Ford - Social Science and Girls Basketball Jason Ford graduated from Bethel College in McKenzie, Tennessee with a B. S. in History and Economics. He completed his M. A. T. at Bethel 2003. Jason started his teaching and coaching career at Henry County High School, in Paris, TN. While at Henry County, he taught American and World History and was an assistant football coach, assistant basketball coach, and head boys/girls tennis coach. Coach Ford has spent the last nine years teaching and coaching at Pleasant Grove High School. While at Pleasant Grove, he has served as assistant football coach and head girls tennis coach. For the last seven years, he has been the school's head girls basketball coach. Coach Ford is married to Nikki, a nurse at UAB hospital. Together they have one daughter, Mackenzie. Coach Ford is excited about joining the staff at Helena High School, and he looks forward to building a successful basketball program in which both the school and community can be proud.
