History TOOK FLIGHT in Mrs. Nichols' 6th grade Social Studies class! ✈️🍫 While learning about the Cold War and the division of Germany, students took part in a hands-on Berlin Airlift simulation—where history, STEM, and a little espionage came together! Inspired by Gail Halvorsen, the "Candy Bomber" who dropped sweets to West Berliners, during the 1948-49 Soviet blockade, the Western Bloc, backed by the Marshall Plan, had plenty of supplies to engineer parachutes for their candy bars. Meanwhile, the Eastern Bloc, under Soviet control, had to get extra resourceful with limited materials! In the end, alliances were tested, history came to life, and, of course, candy was enjoyed! And congratulations to our Candy Drop winners from each period! 🍬🇩🇪 ✈️
Ms. Pierce’s 6th grade ELA classes went on a camping trip today as they read the last chapter of Wednesday Wars, by Gary D. Schmidt. We talked about how “life imitates art” as they relate to the characters in the novel and their English teacher, Mrs. Baker. Since Shakespeare is such a big part of this novel, the students all know to “beware of the Ides of March”. Be safe this weekend!

🌸🍃Gardening Club welcomed Kieth Turney, senior horticulturalist at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens. He taught students how to plant from seed and cuttings—he brought us tickseed (like a daisy!) and silky dogwood. Both are native plants. Thanks, Kieth! 🌸🍃
