Sophomores and Juniors,
We will be offering the PSAT test for those sophomores and juniors interested in taking it on October 29th. Scores from this exam are used by The College Board to determine winners for the National Merit Scholars Program, which is a scholarship program overseen by The College Board. The test results for juniors who choose to test are used for National Merit purposes. Sophomores are allowed to test in order to better prepare for testing during their junior year. The cost to test is $20.00. Students who would like to test, and who receive standardized testing accommodations, must advise Mrs. Stano of their desire to test no later than September 9th, which is the last day to request accommodations. Dear Pre-AP Student,
We hope you have had a wonderful summer so far and are getting excited to start high school in just a few weeks! Earlier this summer, you should have received an email with the Pre-AP/Honors Summer Reading Assignment details; the assignment posting can also be found on the school’s website, but it explains that we will be starting the year out with Greek Myths.
However, several students have reached out about the limited availability of the required annotated text, Echoes from Mt. Olympus published by the Perfection Learning Corporation. If you can obtain a physical copy of this text, the annotation assignment will be easier - I suggest printing the attached PDF of the required readings! The Calera Library offers printing services if you do not have access to a printer.
However, if you cannot get a physical copy of the text - please refer to the attached PDF. Within this document, you will find the required readings. Students should still annotate the text per the original assignment but can also do so digitally if they are not able to order a physical copy of the text OR print the attached PDF. Points will not be deducted for submitting digital annotations! We were not expecting the text to be so limited in its availability so we appreciate your willingness to find work-arounds. Below is a link to the PDF document and some ways to complete the annotation assignment without a physical copy of the text.
https://drive.google.com/file/d/15-wKQHUVPJbzO8t470sq0UqoNOPUX1FD/view
Ways to annotate texts digitally:
PDF editing apps such as PDF Expert (free in the app store, able to use on phones/ipads)
Opening the PDF in the iphone notes app to write on the document
Opening the document in Kami using a computer or ipad (if you are signed into your Shelby County gmail account, you can access Kami for free via Google Drive)
If you have any questions or need clarification on any part of the assignment, we can be reached by email through the school email system or directly at sjay@shelbyed.org or mworthy@shelbyed.org . There will be points in the summer when we may be out of town or lack access to our work email, but we will respond as quickly as we are able to. We look forward to a productive year!
Sincerely,
CHS Pre-AP English 9 Teachers
Ms. Shelby Jay & Ms. Maggie Worthy
