Today in Dr. Doss’ PLTW – Principles of Biomedical Science class at CTEC, students got hands-on experience practicing phlebotomy skills! 🩸 Students used simulation arms to practice drawing “blood” with a variety of needles and vacuum tubes.
And the best part? Many students nailed it on their very first try! 👏🎯

Kerry shared valuable information about career opportunities, apprenticeships, and pathways into the millwright trade, giving our students a look at the possibilities that await them after graduation. 🛠️💼

Today, Chief Hensley’s students honored the courage, bravery, and sacrifice of the firefighters and first responders who answered the call on September 11, 2001. 🚒🧑🚒
Students put on firefighter gear 🧯👨🚒 and climbed the stairs 🪜, carrying the weight of the gear as a small tribute to the heroes who gave everything to help others. ❤️
Each step was a tribute.
Each moment was a reminder.
& Every climb was a way to honor those who served and sacrificed.

Our students had the opportunity to put on their white coats and step into the role as physicians while they took each other's vital signs! They measured temperature🌡️, heart rate❤️, oxygen saturation🫁, respiration rate💨, and even learned how to take a blood pressure reading using a sphygmomanometer.

🧬🔬 Help us give a BIG CTEC welcome to Dr. Catherine Doss! 🎉 We’re so excited to have her joining the CTEC family as our new Biomedical Science teacher!
Dr. Doss brings an incredible background in science and education. She earned her PhD in Molecular Physiology and Biophysics from Vanderbilt University and completed her postdoctoral research at UAB’s Department of Nutrition. She has taught at both the high school and college levels and most recently served as a substitute teacher in Shelby County.
Dr. Doss lives in Montevallo with her husband, Shane, and their two children, RJ and Avery, who are a senior and freshman at Montevallo High School. 💙 You can find her cheering from the stands at a football game nearly every Friday night, supporting RJ as a percussionist in the marching band and Avery as a Majorette/dancer with the auxiliary! 🏈🥁💃

Mr. Reed is entering his 13th year in education and brings a wealth of experience as both a classroom teacher and administrator. He holds a bachelor's degree in Accounting from the University of Alabama, a master's degree in Education from UAB, and an administrative certification from the University of West Alabama.
Throughout his career, Mr. Reed has served as a history teacher at Hueytown Middle School and Helena Middle School, as well as an administrator at Helena High School and Montevallo High School and Middle School. A Helena resident, he and his three children—Jada, Elijah, and Bennett—enjoy spending time together. In his free time, Mr. Reed enjoys listening to audiobooks, following sports, and cooking.
We are excited to welcome Mr. Reed to CTEC and look forward to the leadership, experience, and enthusiasm he brings to our school!
