As the Superintendent of the Shelby County School District, Dr. Lewis Brooks is passionate about ensuring academic excellence and post-graduate success for the district’s more than 21,000 students who attend 31 schools. He is committed to the district’s vision to be the “Model for Excellence in Education”.
Serving as the Superintendent of the seventh largest school district in the State of Alabama, Dr. Brooks supports the county’s largest workforce of 2,800 employees in a suburban school system 10 miles south of the Birmingham metro area.
Dr. Lewis Brooks’ career in public education has spanned 32 years, previously serving as the Deputy Superintendent and the Assistant Superintendent of Administration for Shelby County Schools where he implemented a series of progressive initiatives to enhance safety and student learning.
Dr. Brooks was elected to serve as Superintendent in 2018. During his tenure, he has led Shelby County Schools through several challenges including a world pandemic and the aftermath of a tornado. He has ensured that academic progress continues to be the chief focus as student data continues to trend upward. Dr. Brooks has led the district to undertake a $43 million dollar capital campaign project, providing classroom upgrades and facility improvements. He has fostered innovation through instructional initiatives, including a new surgical technician program and a substantial increase in the number of dual enrollment class offerings throughout the district.
He has received numerous awards for his service including the Samford University Learning for Life Award, the Alabama Association of Prevention and Support Services Leadership Award, and the University of Montevallo Distinguished Alumni Award. He was inducted into the University of Montevallo Student Athlete Hall of Fame and named a Superintendent to Watch by the National School Public Relations Association. He was recently honored as the 2022 Public Servant of the Year, by the Greater Shelby County Chamber of Commerce.
Dr. Brooks holds a doctorate in Instructional Leadership from Samford University, an Educational Specialist degree, a Master of Education, and a Bachelor of Science degree, all from the University of Montevallo.
