On Feb. 11, the University of Montevallo’s College of Education and Human Development held an awards dinner to recognize the achievements of its outstanding alumni. The college presented awards in several categories to recognize accomplishments by alumni who have shown dedication and exemplary commitment to teaching. Those honored from Shelby County Schools were:
2025 Outstanding Alumnus in Secondary Education: Chris Oravet (Calera Middle School )
2025 Lifetime Commitment to Education Award: Dr. Lewis Brooks (Superintendent)
Congratulations to Dr. Brooks and Mr. Oravet on receiving these awards and thank you for your commitment to education.

High school juniors across the district recently had an opportunity to interact with college recruiters at college fair events held at the Shelby County Arts Council and the Shelby County Instructional Services Center. The Alabama Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers sponsored and organized the event.

Attorney General Steve Marshall was on hand today to present Elvin Hill Elementary School with the 2024 Safe Schools Initiative Award which was formally announced in December. Joining Marshall was the three-person judging panel that oversaw the selection process for the awards comprised of Dale Stripling and Seth Sullivan from the Alabama State Department of Education and Pam Revels with the Lee County Sheriff's Office. Elvin Hill Elementary was one of six schools chosen for the award statewide. According to Marshall, EHES was the only school scoring a perfect score on the four-phased application process.

Congratulations to the Chelsea High School Health Science Class of 2025 who participated in their White Jacket and Certified Patient Care Technician pinning this morning. These senior internship students passed the CPCT exam with a 100 % pass rate and have earned the privilege of attending hands-on patient care clinicals at Shelby Baptist Medical Center and Heart South Cardiovascular Group.








Brent McCaleb has been appointed as the interim principal for New Direction. McCaleb has 30 years of experience in public education and most recently served as assistant principal of Helena High School.


Ashli Polizos will serve as assistant principal of Oak Mountain Middle School. Polizos is a National Board certified teacher who has served in education for almost 19 years. She taught middle school and high school for 12 years. She most recently served as assistant principal at Oak Mountain High School.

All Shelby County Schools will be open and will operate on a normal schedule on Wednesday, January 22.


Due to the threat of winter weather, Shelby County Schools will be closed on Tuesday, January 21. Students will transition to remote learning. All extracurricular activities are also canceled.
